| 2/29/2008 Hi Timothy, If I were you, when you come over, there will be so much to see, I would try and arrange for a visit to St Brides Church in Douglas, Lanarkshire, as a family we visited it about twenty years ago and I was so impressed, we had to collect the main church door key from a lady who lived nearby. Colin. Colin Douglas [colin.d.douglas@blueyonder.co.uk] From Tim Tyler I thought you might want to write about the Douglas that lives there now. Also Clan Douglas Society is going to have AGM there in Scotland in 2009. As A member you can come join us. Is there a way to grow Clan Douglas over There in Scotland? We are Coming next year for the Gathering see http://clandouglassociety.org/GatheringoftheClans.html Hi, I believe you`re correct about the Douglases supporting William and Mary and that we supported the Covenanters. I am reading an historical novel about the Douglases, it is called the Black Douglases and it was written by Michael Brown, ISBN 1 86232 036 5. It would appear that the Black Douglases and the Sinclair family from Caithness and the Orkneys were related through marriage. James 'The Gross' Lord of Balvenie and Abercorn, 1st Earl of Avondale, 7th Earl of Douglas, married Beatrice Sinclair, sister of William 3rd Earl of Orkney in the early 1400s. This is the same Sinclair family who built Roslyn Chapel in East Lothian, (the film The Da Vinci Code). According to what I have read in the Black Douglas book so far the Sinclairs and the Douglases were intow with the knights Templar in the 14th century and therefore through this same connection the Douglas family have been associated with the Order of the Masons and therefore Prebyterianism. William Douglas the 1st Earl of Nithsdale brother of James the Gross, married Egidia Stewart daughter of Robert 11, William and Egidia had two children, William 2nd Earl of Nithsdale and Egidia Douglas, Egidia married Henry Sinclair 2nd Earl of Orkney, further strengthened the links between the Douglases and Sinclairs. There are several sites on the internet where you can find out about the battles of Falkirk, if you go to this site <http://www.britishbattles.com/battle_of_falkirk.html> you will get a good account of the 2nd battle of Falkirk. There is a map with the combatants positions before the battle and lots of other stuff. Another good site can be found on the Falkirk Local History Society site, The Electric Scotland site also gives good information on both battles. My Douglas folks came from Linlithgowshire in Scotland near Abercorn? where there is a lot of Covenanters history, I have to decline your offer of a Web site and writing some historical stories about the Douglases, but I am sure if you "Google" all these sites you will go from one highly interesting piece of information to the next one its hard to stop the train!
